Janeen's Maine Birthday Ride

Well, Ah-D and I made it out for a nice little ride last night right before dark to celebrate Janeen's birthday!  And, there is more cause for celebration because it was our very first after work ride of the year!!!

Grace celebrating with gleeful roll in the snow

I can't believe there is finally enough light (and I have enough energy) to have a nice ride after work.  The snow is fast disappearing, and the sap buckets are filling quickly.  Grace felt good enough to roll in the snow during a rest stop halfway through the ride.
Ah-D was a peach.  I made sure to throw him some hay the minute I arrived home, so that by the time I was ready to saddle up that he wasn't starving for a snack and crabby about it.  I am hoping I will have enough time later in the week to take another After Work Ride to celebrate with Janeen!

Invitation to a Cyber Birthday Party Ride!

Hi all you RAC'ers!

My birthday is the 30th of March and I want you all to ride or drive with me cyber style one day this week, if not all the days!  Then I want you to kindly blog about your ride on here so I can see where "we" went!  Are you all in?  That's what I thought I you would say!  Let's party!

Janeen Radtke, Corky and Rocky from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!

Cowgirl or Girl fool with her horse.. you decide ;-)

Oh yeah, just to be funny, I have been messing around with Sunny about laying down.  So, over the past month, he'll lay down after a ride.  Yesterday, in the windy conditions, as you can hear... Sunny isn't too worried about it and this is the second time I stayed on him while he got up.  I try not to do it too often so I don't break his trust about laying down near me... but as you can see... towards the end of the video.... he's pretty relaxed about the whole situation! lol... what a guy.
After I hopped off, I took him back the paddock and he layed down two more times!  I didnt' get on him though.  Just patted him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oItxZQnVikE
If you see the trailer in the back of the video... that's our 'new' round pen!  Can't wait to starting messing around in there!  And... I played one of those 'game' of desensitizing / trust building and had him sniff, touch, paw and climb up with front feet on  the trailer!  Fun!

Love the new game!

We had wind here too in East Ottawa, Canada yesterday!  Wow.  Didn't stop us from going out either though!  We are the Irish Setter and Portuguese Water Dog gang!  hahaha
My curly did great!  And didn't worry to much about the wind.  My girlfriends horse though, wasn't too happy with the conditions.  Getting a bit riled up a few times.  I think Sunny was a good influence since he just moved along without caring.
Bringing me to Aprils game! Yahoo!  Now you're talking my style!  I LOVE doing this stuff.  And with two small kids around, I can't ride too often so I do THIS stuff!  I swear I have more creativity than my kids!   Whatever I can dream up ... putting stuff on Sunny, over him, around him, have him jump, touch, paw, climb.  Because I do it all mostly from the ground.  But it transfers to the saddle.  He's only be saddle broke (by very unproffesional me) for less than 5 months but he went along a trail yesterday (only still using a rope halter with reins) totally loose rein, at a canter, saw something he didn't really like.... just loped along, drifting slightly (which I allow with no worries) and never broke gait!  I was so pleased with him.  Wind whipping, his buddy far behind us and cantering along.
I believe this de-spooking, desensitizing stuff is GOLD!  It not only helps the horse go 'left-brain' and calm but more importantly! it shows the owner / rider HOW the horse deals with his / her nerves and how to help them overcome it.  Because there is a good chance, if you ride a horse, they will spook or be weary of something!  How the rider deals with it can make or break the situation.  I have learned Sunny's 'cues' about when he is tense and not feeling confident and I know how to help him now BEFORE the blow up comes.  Because I've done so much of this ground work, desensitizing stuff.  It's made him more left brain confident and it's made me more confident and relaxed.
Yey RAC for promotting such valuable training.
Take the time it takes, don't push your horse through his thresholds, if you are patient, he will offer to break through his thresholds himself and he will thank you for understanding him ;-)

Wild, Wild Wind!

~Susan and Ah-D and the Lab Gang in Maine~
Joyful wanderings
I woke up in a funk this morning and caught a chill doing chores in the freezing cold weather and biting wind, so I took a nap.  After my nap, I felt so much better, all energized and ready to clean the house and ...RIDE! It was warmer than the morning, but that wind was still WILD, and therefore, so was my Curly. My oldest Lab Grace failed rapidly last week, and I really wanted her to be able to go, so I made this ride short with lots of stops to smell the roses, which in this case was fresh snow, pine branches and clean air.  We crossed our pastures, and Ah-D was beside himself with freshness as the wind whipped through the fields.  We made our way across the power line and into the haven of the woods, where the wind was only whipping the tops of the trees.  I was quite warmly dressed in my parka and toasty lined gloves wasn't cold in the least.
We received about a foot of snow earlier in the week, so the stone walls were mostly hidden.
Ah-D was very forward, but very attuned to me.  I was so happy to be out and about with my beloved horse and dogs.  We stopped many times so I could admire the beauty of the scenery and watch my Labs run around sniffing in heady delight.

Cameo turns two years old tomorrow, but she is still a puppy at heart.
We didn't stay out too long or travel too far. Grace kept up just fine.  After the ride, I spent some time with Ah-D trimming his feet and just hanging out with he and Allie.  I took in that wonderful warm horse smell and gave him lots of scratches and rubs.  In return, he nuzzled me over and over and laid his head on me.
I am so blessed.

party is over!real training starts today!

Poor little Bucky....your life as a young party animal is over!

Announcing our 1st RAC Game for April!

Good Morning RAC Team!

(With just a week or so before April 1st, I wanted to give you a heads up on your April Game! As you will see it might take a little pre-planning.)

In preparing our curlies for the big summer season, April's game is going to be "Bombproofing Your Curly."
Below are some links to give you some ideas of fun things you can do. You can actually do any of these things
throughout the year to further advance your horse's abilities.

Please keep in mind that SAFETY is number 1 for both you and your Curly, so be smart,
take it slow and work from the ground first.

Speaking of "Ground" for the month of APRIL only, you may count your time with your curly on the ground work doing these exercises. Feel free to start messing with your curlies now if you want, but you may not count points on the ground work until April 1st - April 30th. Please make a note on your form that this is for the April Games when you are tallying ground points.

And don't forget to blog! We want to see all the things you are doing! Be creative and HAVE FUN!!!

Some days are...

a milestone. And, today was one of them.

Clooney, the grey stallion, has been in training with a Classical Dressage trainer. It's a first for him, as he was trained western. Clooney is taking to it really well, and the trainer was proud of him today. I showed up and we waited for the rain to stop, and when it finally did, we headed for the roundpen. Clooney on the longe line was excited today due to the wind and rain, but settled down. I got on board, and let myself be longed in the gallop. It was a milestone for us both, as I hadn't ridden him since my accident almost three years ago (not on Clooney mind you). It was like being at the Spanish Riding School, going round and round in a gallop with hardly a touch on the reins and rather sitting up high lifting the back straight and getting my butt into the saddle, deep and relaxed. What a great day. Here's Clooney today with a head band made by Marianne Olsen (she's a Curly owner). Doesn't he look great!

Impressive!

And Winter is out with a BANG!! I noticed many of our RAC group was covered in this storm! Heavy, wet snow and now it's desperately trying to freeze rain! Ugh! I didn't expect to do anything productive with Linus today but the afternoon weather wasn't too bad and my new hackamore came a week early!! So I just had to try it. I had some fellow RACers helping me with input (many thanks Caren and Marion). I had wanted to try the LG Zaum bitless. It was kind of pricey though and I wanted to try to get something from Canada to save on customs, shipping etc. Well my weeks of searching prevailed and I found a company who makes the pictured "Floatation Hackamore" right here in Canada. Their service was excellent and I am very pleased with the quality. Even though today was a short round pen trial I was exceptionally pleased!! I got nice tight circles in both directions from Linus, a great whoa and very quick backing. All on a pretty loose rein and with no stiff neck or head tossing from him. When I got off he didn't try to rub it off on me either!
Linus was very good today. I don't know if he got his first bout of "spring fever" out of him yetserday? I just used the bareback pad. I usually find it hard to get him going in the round pen. He gets bored in there so easy. Today he was a gem though. He went both directions very easy, trotted as soon as I asked and whoa'd by my voice! It was a superb little ride and made my day!
Doesn't he look more like a shaggy shetland?? (Ok maybe not a shetland! Lol)

Road to the Horse 2013 in Lexington, KY  Totally wonderful and amazing~4 terrific horsemen/women.  Demonstrations, shopping, training and the final test.  At first I thought Guy Mcleans method was too much, too strong and demanding of the horse too fast but it sure paid off on day 3. The 6666 Remuda horses were bred for intelligence & brought quite a challenge to the competitors. They were all just great~ Guy McLean, Dan James, Obie Schlom, & Sarah  Winters. The announcers were terrific, too.
And thanks to Ride-a-Curly I hooked up with a total stranger who trailered her Curlies up from South Kentucky along with her tack for us to ride over 5 hours in the Kentucky Horse Park! Marion Huurman of Hidden Cave Ranch quickly became a good friend and riding partner with her "Blue Eyed Jake" & "Warrior Freedom" ~ two gorgeous Curlies who grabbed the attention of everyone we passed and handled tons of unfamiliar stimuli like a Curlie should: in stride! And Jake~what a fluid canter!!!  Curlies rock and so did this year's RttH! Thank you so much Marion!!!

Calm Before The Storm?

Not quite for Linus anyway. He wasn't too calm today. Granted, I think it has been about a month since he was ridden. Weather, footing and timing have just kept clashing! We were at least able to put the horses in the front pasture for a much needed frolic on the weekend.
Linus was a bit wound up today when I first brought him out so I turned him around and put him right back in (it's set up as a 60' round pen for now) and we did some free lunging for about 10 minutes until he finally decided to settle in. He walked in to me and then he backed up and yielded his quarters nicely on both sides. So back out we went. I gave him a quick grooming. I'm really trying to not encourage shedding. We had some very mild weather and the last few nights have been back to double digits below zero. I had to lower my cinch on the billet side of the saddle - must be all that extra winter hair.....(Ha ha, ya right Lardo Linus!) Ah well, coming out of winter with a few extra pounds isn't the worst thing that could happen.
Linus was pretty tense at the start of our ride. He is itching to GO! So we did a fair amount of Whoa and back up. It didn't take him long to settle in to me because he knew at any second I could ask him to stop. Once he settled we had a nice, loose trot - I could trot for hours on this horse! We're limited to where we can go right now. There's so much mud but there are still some deep snow drifts too.
I was quite happy when we finished up at an easy walk on a long, loose rein. I hope it's not long before we can keep riding at least 3 or 4 days a week! I've got to get my butt in gear over the separation. I would ride so much more if I could get Linus happily away from Allie long enough to enjoy it!

Dressage Training Day

We had our first event this past weekend, a dressage training day - it was held right here at our farm. I rode *Shesa Magic Charm in Training One and Anastasia rode *CNC Joeseph King of Dreams in Walk/Trot D. Even though this was on familiar ground, it always seems to make a person nervous to know that they will be scored by someone else!

Both horses did a pretty good job - I have only been riding *Charm for about a month this year, but Anastasia has been riding *Joe all winter. Here are a couple of pictures. Happy Spring!

St. Patrick's Weekend Rides!

Well, I've had a busy weekend riding with first Denise yesterday and another friend today, Catherine, or Cat as we fondly call her.  Both days were beautifully sunny, but cool, like mid 20's in the afternoon.   Yesterday after Denise arrived we tacked up and I was getting mounted on Corky, but he wasn't standing still after I was on and adjusting my stirrups, so I was repeating the whoa, when he stepped into some deep snow, backed up, slipped on an icy spot and just folded up underneath me.  It was soooo funny!  Denise was adjusting her girth, so all she seen was me laying on the ground, Corky attempting to get up and realized my right leg was still in the stirrup and my boot came off in the stirrup, so Corky just laid back down and sighed.  Poor boy!  What a heck of a start!  I get my boot back on and ask Corky to get up, which he does and of course this time around he stood still.  And we're off!
Dixie, Denise's afternoon mount.  No curls there!
Denise was kind enough to take a couple of pictures on our ride yesterday.  I had my camera with me and when I went to take pictures of her, of course, the batteries were dead!  Ugghhh!  We were out for about 45 minutes so I could show all the trails that I've been riding here this winter.  We had a good time!

Me on Corky and our faithful trail companion Chance!
Today, as I said, Cat came over in the afternoon.  Again, the sun was shining immensely, but it was chilly!  Once again, we started out and just enjoyed the day and the trails.  We got about 3 more inches of snow last night, so the trail was all fresh.  The trees were absolutely beautiful today because they were coated in snow again, but then of course we were covered too!

Cat on Dixie
This shot here is on a new section of trail that my husband has just done in the last month.  Such a lucky girl I am!  It runs along the bank of the creek and should be dry year round, so I can have a little trail all the time!

A view going down onto the bank and up the other side.
Me on Cork!

Chancer posing!
So I hope everyone has had as much fun as I have had this weekend!  Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Facebook brings NY and KY,RAC-ers together at trail ride in famous KY horsepark

I don't even recall how it went, but I got a message from a Vicki on Facebook if I was going to ROAD OF THE HORSE 2013. I didn't know her and we have never meet. I told her I was not planning going to the competition, but KY horse park opened their trails prior to the competition and I was planning going there.
As a joke I said I can bring an extra curly if you want to join me....and so it went ;-) be careful what you say LOL.

I almost didn't go since I had a mare getting ready to foal. She was already late, but nothing showed she was having a foal when I left. I called home later at the end of the day and still no signs according to my husband who I promoted to horse midwife. So I stayed for the night since it is a 3 hour drive. We had a 4 hour trail ride and 6 hour in the trailer I thought that was to much for the horses. AND Vicki had a ticket for the Road of the Horse for me on Friday.
Turned out Vicki also entered RAC and we met at the registration. I brought Warrior Freedom and Blue Eyed Jake for her to ride.
Not only did we had a great time I have a new Curly friend thanks to RAC and Facebook!
 Vicki and Jake

 Me and Freedom

On Thursday we went twice. First about 2.5 hours. Then we brought the horses in their stalls and went for lunch. Officially the trails where closed after 4.00 but there was nobody there so we went for a second ride.
We found an obstacle course that was such a great opportunity to get our horses trough there. Jake had some difficulties going over this big board. Freedom did AWESOME he surprised me in every way. I so underestimated him wow.
Later we went to the famous eventing area at the park. This is where the WEG 2010 took place too. Of course we didn't jump ( it was not allowed anyway) but we did took some hills and water crossings. Both horses A+ we where so proud.
Look at all those long white fences

We got lots of comments about the horses, 99% of the people had never seen a Curly horse in real and this was a good time to see their winter curls.
In July we will be promoting the Curly's at the Breyerfest in Lexington but then there will be summer coats and not so many curls.
Thank you Vicki I had a great time and thank you Freedom and Jake for being such good horses!

On Friday morning my phone rings at 6.00....O,O....and yes my fear was confirmed! WE HAVE A FOAL my husband shouting in a little panicking voice. But everything went very well. The foal was already up and drinking. That meant I could stay to watch the first day of Road to the horse.

First we went on a trail ride again since it was so quiet at the other side of the park and then we went to see the remuda of the horses and the competitors take their pick
I watched a little more but got restless and wanted to go home and meet our new born filly.
Overall a perfect two days in Lexington making new friends and making great progress and promotion with our Curly horses.

The Really Great Outdoors

Today Legacy and I had the most enjoyable drive...we are now working outdoors, in our former outdoor arena. I took down the corral panels and posts, that made up our outdoor arena, for a little more room to work!
Going from inside to outside has its obvious differences, but for driving horses, there is another difference....the footing is quite different, and a full carriage does not pull as easily on ungroomed ground with natural divits and lumps and bumps.  Legacy and I had a nice "warm up drive" yesterday, in the great outdoors....she felt she needed to trot to pull, so I let her. Trotting gives a horse the advantage of impulsion, moving the carriage is easier in certain circumstances at the trot, rather than the walk...so, I felt today would be a bit of a test to see if she still needed to trot to move the carriage.

I was quite pleased that most of our work today was done at the walk!  Legacy is comfortable with the uneven ground...and we had a very enjoyable session of work...

Legacy is a bit of a ham also...she always "holds" her lead rope while I harness and unharness. I decided for a photo today, and every time she took the rope and I get my camera ready, she dropped the rope!  finally I turned my back and catch her not looking at me...LOL...silly girl !!! the curly genes run deep.

A Special Day in My Life

Back in 2008 when my son, Eric, was 14 years old he decided that he wanted to start riding horse with us, so I threw him up on my QH, Jake, and off he went.  He was one of those naturals that just hops on and seems to know exactly what to do.  Case in point; he asked me how to post the trot and I explained it to him, telling him not to get discouraged because sometimes it took people quite a while to figure it out.  We took off at a trot and he said "Is this how you are supposed to do it?".  I couldn't believe my eyes, he was posting!!!  I can't tell you how long it took me to figure out, I had to do the "1,2,1,2,1,2" in order to get the beat, lol!  Anyhow, he decided he wanted to continue to ride so we bought me another horse, Shya, and I gave him Jake.  We rode as a team on Competitive Mounted Orienteering that entire season.  At the end of the season he stated "I don't want to ride horse anymore", and he stuck by it and refused to ride.  Now I had three horses and two riders, teenagers!!!  Jake was in his mid to late twenties and it hurt my body to ride him so he became a pasture pet.  It has bothered me to have him in the pasture not being ridden because he is an amazing horse but Shya is just sooooo much smoother (and for a horse now in his early 30's he is in amazing shape).  I have asked Eric time and time again if he would ride with me and he has refused every time.  Until this week.  I asked him if he would ride with me over Spring Break and he said YES!  I hooked the trailer up yesterday morning with high expectations of driving an hour away, riding in the mountains, then picketing and enjoying a picnic lunch while we enjoyed the bluff view.  Didn't happen, he wouldn't get out of bed.  By 11 am my hopes were dashed.  I figured he was blowing me off when he jumped out of bed and said "Let's go".  Luckily we have some trails only 5 miles away from our house. They are logging trails that are no more than an hour and a half long, I wasn't going to get my picnic lunch but at least I would be riding.   When we got there he helped me tack up the horses, and he remembered everything.  Shya can be a bit of a handful so I put him on my husband's curly, Pickles.  We took off and Eric asked why her ears were back.  I looked at her and could tell she was trying to figure out who was up there.  It was so funny.  After a bit her ears came forward and she was fine (Pickles has mostly been ridden by my husband since we got her, with an occasional ride from me).  Both girls were taking it really easy, as if they knew he hadn't ridden in a while.  Shortly into the ride, Eric was ready to move out faster.  Neither one of the girls is a leader so it was a bit of a work out on our parts.  Shya kept slowing down in an attempt to let Pickles pass her so she wouldn't have to lead.  Pickles would slow down so that she wouldn't have to pass Shya and take the lead.   The same thing happened when we put Pickles in front.  Our curly girls are NOT the most motivated when it is just the two of them so this was really good for them. It gave me a training opportunity for both the girls, which I love. I finally got Shya to be willingly in the lead and loping.  I looked back at Eric and saw a big smile on his face as Pickles broke into her rocking horse lope.   Tears of joy came to my eyes, I was riding horse with my son!  How wonderful that I got to share this special day with him and our Curly girls.  It is one I will always remember.  Oh, and at the end we came across a few hikers who asked about our horses and I was able to pass on the word about our special horses with their hypo-allergenic qualities!

visions of spring

The last few days here have seemed pretty spring like. I have taken the opportunity to continue my driving conditioning program. Legacy and I are up to a solid 1/2 hr of working trot, mixed with walk , halt and back. We still have gobs of work to do, esp for the "rein back"  Legacy worries about backing. I don't know if it is the fact she can not see where she is going (due to her blinkers)  or worries about pushing my carriage backwards or ????? instead of a nice rounded proper back, we get a high headed, hollowed back version...so, I think I will work on the rein back in long lines, and see if I can get her confidence better, and then ask for the rein back in the carriage.
I can tell that Legacy is getting more and more fit. She is on pasture now, as our grass has grown enough for her to graze, instead of me feeding hay. She gets a measured serving of grain
We will work up to 45 min of trot work in our arena. Then, we take things outside and repeat our workouts and start to add in hill work. Getting a harness horse fit and strong is a long process,  but Legacy and I sure are enjoying the journey along the way. New pics soon!

The longest Winter ever!

Okay so it's probably not the longest but it sure feels that way.  Theo and Abby got a full week off due to lack of time and going to the Illinois Horse Fair.  I was suppose to take Abby but with her stifle issues we had to cancel.
I am pleased to announce though that I can now ride her for 15-20 minutes at a time and she is staying sound!   I also got my harness back from getting reoiled and the lines dyed so I'll be ground driving her for some exercise as well.  I might be jinxing myself for saying this but so far she hasn't started to shed.  I'm really hoping she will hang on to her coat until after the Midwest Horse Fair because she has one of those tight curly coats so it's great for the audience to see the different types.  Plus she sheds in clumps so it looks like she has mange for a month while she sheds.

Theo and I have made tons of progress in our lessons.  I think we might be bonding a little more each time.  I was struggling with his leads but after some clearer directions from me he is picking them up about 85% of the time.  Yesterday in our lesson we jumped for the first time in months!  It was very nice and I had control which wasn't always present in previous jumping sessions.  Once I edit the video I'll post it.  I had to roach his mane because one of the trainers was brushing it (my bad I fogot to mention not to) so it was all uneven and he had some starting to fall out due to the bacteria which I treated.  So now his mane matches his sides.  It looks pretty good actually.  I'm also starting to keep his tail up so it's longer by next year.  He will be making an apperance at the Horse Fair instead of Abby so this year I'm going to get him out as much as possible so he is exposed to everything. His second outing this year will be another clinic with my trainer and then we are going to the Larry Whitesell clinic in May.  Larry normally teaches gaited horses but he uses dressage and rides dressage so it will fit in with what we are doing.  Then camping and some endurance rides.  I'm hoping by fall I have the courage to do a 3day event with him.  I think doing some endurance rides will build my confidence in how much control I have with him.

so that's me I'm excited for the first challenge

Sorry no recent pics I'm horrible at remembering

At Helsinki Horsefair with Yuma!

Last weekend we ware in Horsefair. There ware about 30 000 visitors in two days and Yuma was so fine. We heard hundreds of jokes about a horse with a perm and met new curly owners in Finland and a few guests came just to see curly!

Photos are from morning prior to the opening of the doors.

Sneaking a ride in before dark!

Today the weather was very mixed, it had rained the last few days and there were reports of thunder storms to the west of us. All of our snow has melted, and these big yellow-dark clouds threatened hail! But, in between there were breaks of sunshine that warmed us. My helper and I were busy mucking out stalls, and chatting, and afterwards we warmed up with a tea, I said, let's go ride. I wanted to get Diamond going again. I rode her the other day without a saddle, as that is how she was trained, but it was time to really get her going again. So, we started brushing. The horses had rolled in the mud, and there was dry dust flying in big thick puffs everywhere. The Curlies have started to really shed now, and so piles of fluffly hair were forming with flying waifs all around. The weather was cold enough that we shouldn't bath, so we settled for getting the dried mud off, and combing out the loose hair. They looked rather good.

Saddling the mares, we headed for the roundpen, it was not at its driest but we really needed to warm the ladies up and lunge them before mounting. I double lunge horses all the time, sometime even three at a time, to warm them up, let them settle especially after a long winter, or when they've been in the box. So, we started to lunge (saddled and bridled) boy were the girls full of vinegar! A few bucks there, a challenge here, it was like watching rodeo horses! Well, their getting enough nutrients. Diamond, who is kept in the mare herd, calmed right down, however Lark who is kept in the box and gets turn out every day really had some power, it took her a few more rounds to settle.

We left the roundpen to mount. I first rode Lark to see that she was really settled down, and she was, and so my helper was up in a flash, and I mounted Diamond. Diamond has an interesting history, she was trained only with a rope halter and it was said she couldn't be ridden with a bit. Now, I believe in bits, as it was told me that once Diamond took off with a rider at one point. Diamond you see was bred at our farm, and is a fantastic horse. She wasn't trained though by us, and so we are working on certain parts, filling out Diamond's training, and one of those is to use a bit. She's been with us for a while now, and has really gotten settled with the bridle and bit.

We started with lunging her with a bridle and bit without reins last year. And, I started riding her initially with the rope halter and lead line as control while she got used to no pressure at all on the bridle and bit. Over time, a four rein system (like with a borsal where one uses the borsal and a bit to get the horse used to the feel) helped Diamond to understand what was being asked of her. She's much better now, and so today we restarted where we left off, light flexions to the right, to the left, giving by flexing in briefly, each time my hands offering a release within a second of her responding. Work in the walk and then the trot. It went well, and she was very concentrated on the work. Diamond is a bit of comic so she can often get distracted, so I was really proud of her. This is the first time in several months that she had been ridden except for a couple f rounds in the roundpen at the walk a few days before. Last year, we worked with her all summer to get her trail riding. I'm very happy with the results. My helper also did a great job riding Lark, she has spent a time away from riding, and is now really getting the hang of it again. We finished up just as it was getting dark!

Sadly, we forgot the camera :( I'll try to remember next time, it is just things happen so fast here, that sometimes I don't know that I'm going to ride until the last minute when the weather says, go for it!

Much Needed Weekend

I jokingly posted on Facebook that this weekend would be a great weekend for camping since it would be in the 60's.  My friend, Lara, commented back that it sounded like a good idea, maybe we should camp Saturday nite.  She asked her husband, who immediately said yes, and I asked mine, who said he thought we were crazy, but agreed to go.  I packed up Saturday morning and waited for Mark to get home from work at 1:30 pm.  After he got home, we loaded up the girls and headed to Catoosa Ridge; which is about and hour away from us.  When we got there our friends had our campsite all picked out and had a nice warm campfire going.  We put the horses in the stalls and gave them food and water.  We backed the trailer into the campsite and settled in next to the fire.  We woke up the next morning, ate breakfast and hit the trails.  In the past Shya spooked at the manure pit, the gazebo and the mounting block but this time she didn't seem to notice them.  We were riding in the back of the line but Shya was fine with it because I have worked with her on being in different places in line. The problem arose when we missed a turn-off and I asked her to turn around and become the leader.  She tried her famous "act like you are going to attack the horse next to you act" on poor Vegas.  In the past I would be so worried about her hurting the other horse that I would just move her out of the way and let the other horse lead.  But since I have my strength back I have not been allowing her to get away with it.  My friend moved her horse out of the way and I made Shya lead.  She was not happy, but she did it.  She tried to move off the trail a few times, but I urged her forward.  Then I asked her for a trot, which she did reluctantly.  A few times she stopped and tried to let Pickles pass her, but Mark just stopped Pickles and I urged Shya on.  She did try to ditch sideways into a tree at one point, but once again I urged her on.   When she relaxed and accepted leading, I turned her to the side and allowed the others to pass and took the pressure off from her.  I like it when I am trail riding and a learning opportunity arises.  The rest of the trail ride was without event and we just got to enjoy each other.  She just gets better and better with each ride and I love that I have friends that I ride with that are willing to let me work with her.
