ride today

Hi, my name is Debbie, i live near Houston, TX.  I bought a  Curly from Shelly White just over two years ago. Runner is a very fun, cute, horse to have in my herd.  He is my only Curly.  I have one older Arab, a half arab pinto, and a QH.  I am deathly allergic to the Arab and Pinto.  It is weird how my allergies have gotten worse with age.  I love all my horses, but the more I ride Runner, the more I like him.  He will be 5 in March and has recently started an endurance / pleasure horse career.  I compete in endurance.  But as far as "endurance" is concerned, I am not out to win, only complete.  My only goal with Runner is to get the decade team award.  (that means you and your horse do at least 1, 50 mile ride for 10 years.)  I was 3 years away from getting that award with my horse Gordon, but he is retired due to having cushings.

Today i headed up to ride in a local park with my friend and step dad.  It was a absolutely, perfect, winter day here.  Lots of sun and i think we might have hit temps close to 70*f today.  It was a perfect day for a ride.  I rode up there two weeks ago, and Runner must have been having a bad day.  He did not want to take the lead at all.  finally about 7 miles into it, he would go in the front and be a good, brave lead horse.  Today was a different day.  He led from the beginning.  He is young, so still learning.  At the end of the day, I did not come off, so he was a good boy!  (everyone falls, I just haven't come off him yet. im sure the time will come one day.)  anyway, my friend I was riding with swallowed a bug as we were doing about a 10+ mph trot.  Her reaction to the bug was more than hilarious.  Runner was in front, trotting during the bug drama.  I started laughing uncontrollably.  Runner kept steady, and forward on trail.  the sand got deeper so he broke into a canter.  He was cantering around corners and down trail, all the time, I was laughing hysterically.  Runner is not a big "spooker", but if he had made a slight spook during this time, I am sure I would have hit the ground.

Riding is all about having fun!  today was definitely a FUN day!!!  Can't wait to ride him Tuesday.

  1. That is some rough winter temps...wow :-) We have a windshield of -20 today I'll trade places with ya! I am going to do endurance this summer with my gelding. How often do you train?

    1. Hi, I try to train twice a week. one longer ride, one slower, faster ride. Runner is going to be a natural. If he does a limited distance endurance ride, he will be off at least 1 week, if not more.

  2. I wish it was 70 here, but then that would mean bugs! I'm not sure which is worse, bugs or artic cold. Glad you had a good time!

    1. bugs are not bad. do not need fly spray yet. usually order fly predators in April. that helps. :) Myself and Runner do not like artic cold. Stay warm!!! :)

  3. We love winter riding here in frigid Ontario! You have the same concern I do - everyone falls off but I haven't yet either and my horse will be 4 this year! I keep thinking it should have happened several times by now with my young man but he's pretty level headed and not spooky. Best of luck! I'd love to try endurance rides when Linus is a bit older! He loves trail!

    1. Donna, LD riding is something I would like to try, too, and I'm waiting for my last birdie to fly the nest, so we may be ready at the same time and can do Ride With Me's.
