Hello fellow curly admirers!

Sassy and me

Happy New Year everyone!!
Sassy and I are so excited to be doing this contest with you guys!!! I have enjoyed looking at the picts posted of everyone's CurlyRiffic equine partners!
We started the New Year off with her hind right hock swelling...(bad sprain)  NO Idea how she managed to hurt it...*No heat NOR limp...but joint was huge* having to have it drained..and stall rest until tomorrow! Wrap came off today and it looks great!!! She has been such a good girl about that whole lil adventure....but is not at all thrilled about being stalled.  So, we played  inside her stall today with clicker/target training. We worked on touching the target with her nose while placed between her front legs.....sending her from the other side of her stall to touch the target.....backing on verbal request....and smiling...LLLOLLL <3  She also has one of the jolly balls hanging in her stall...that I use as a target as well and we batted that back and forth for a few.....

How did you all discover the wonderful world of equine curls???  For me it was by "accident".  I have a twenty-eight year old Appendix bay that was gifted to me....and before I received her papers...I had a gentleman that was convinced KAllie-Girl had Cushings.......mmmm NOPE...she is a recessive Curly. Not many horse persons in this area are familiar with Curlies.  Sassy is an American Bashkir Curly with the tight Marcel wave....and when people see her...their reactions make me smile.  There are times she reminds me of a Boyd Bear....LLOLL

Horsey Hugs

  1. Hi Krissy! Sorry to hear Sassy has an "ouchie"....but glad that her hock is looking great today. That's cool that you played games inside with her and your clicker. I'll bet she really appreciated the change from her stall rest boredom.

Isn't it always interesting the way people react to the curlies? Makes me smile as well, sometimes laugh out loud!

Looking to read more and see more photos of what you and Sassy are doing....btw, I find your profile photo of her to be stunning! She is pretty!!!

  2. I first saw Curlies in the Horse Illustrated back in I think the '90's. On the cover was Betsy's stallion, Colonel Reuben. I thought he was gorgeous and loved the article about them. Then I joined Yahoo Groups, and one in particular called EquinesNortheast. Someone on there posted about their Curly Horse (that person ended up being Adria Halstead-Johnson, now a dear friend), and I commented back "I Love curlies!!!!" She said "well you know, there are Curlies right in Vermont!" and I had no idea! So I started looking them up, Adria was in VT but not currently breeding, but I found Betsy, and bought my first Curly from her about 10 years ago, *Wind Traveler, who happened to be Reuben's colt. Unfortunately Travvy met with an early demise when he somehow managed to impale himself on a stick in the paddock. After I lost him, I found and purchased Lakota who I still have now, and later found her sister, Morningstar Jen who I bought 4 years ago.

  3. Glad to see Sassy is doing better. You did a great job keeping her busy with the clicker, that is so cool.
I hope she will be a 100% very soon.
    Good luck!

  4. Hi Krissy,
I first found out about Curly horses when I was doing research on the internet into therapeutic riding for my thesis in 2000. I stumbled on a website (I am sad not to remember which website it was...) it was in the US and they used Curlies as therapy horses. I had always been riding and love horses, I had my own part bred welsh and used to do competition riding a lot. I thought I knew a lot about horses but I had never heard of Curly horses:) I decided to reed more about them and fell in love with the pictures and stories about Curlies. I decided that if I was going to buy a horse again it would be a Curly! Since then I have been a fan, I previously had a Curly gelding. Now I have my filly and hope to still find a nice Curly horse to ride.
