New Years Ride!

A whole group of girls met up at our barn (it has an indoor arena) this afternoon for a New Years ride.  Before all the excitement, I brought Sailor up to the big barn.  He'd never been in an indoor before.  We walked around and sniffed stuff then I clipped him and saddled him up.  After longeing for a few minutes, I climbed on.  He wasn't sure he could move with someone on his back but he figured it out.  We didn't do anything strenuous, just about 5 circuits around the barn.  He's got the whole turning and whoa-ing down though, lol.  I've spent tons of time ground driving him so this was what I expected.

When all the company got there, I rode Emmy.   This was really a good experience for her.  There were 5 other horses in the arena with us and several barn husbands around, lots of chaos for a green girl!  She took it all in stride.  Right now our training focus is getting her to relax into the bit and flex a bit for me.  She improves every time I ride her, even today with all the commotion.

Of course, I had to get Simon out to show him off.  Everybody sqeed over the curly curly baby!  He was really good with all of it.  He found a lifelong friend in one of the barn husbands.  He's got longer fingernails and he knows just where to scratch.  I think they're both in love.  I walked Simon all over the barn and he was so good.  He's a bold one to be such a baby.  Since he's extremely hairy and our weather in Kentucky isn't like what he's used to in Canada, I decided to clip him a bit.  I put the half inch guard on the clippers and clipped his chest and part of his belly.  He wasn't too happy about the vibration but he stood like a gentleman and let me do it.  I could tell he was rolling those little eyes though, lol.

I didn't get any pics.  I actually left the camera in the car!  Maybe tomorrow....

I hope everybody had a good New Year like I did!!

  1. Sounds like a great afternoon for both you and all your curlies!

Ahh, that balance thing is always an interesting feeling...for the rider as well!:~) Sailor sounds like quite the trooper and ready for whatever comes his way with all the ground driving you have done with him.

And Emmy...well, what's not to be proud of with so many new experiences being thrown at her!

Then you bring out your show stopper, Simon. Everyone had to be in love with your super stoic curly baby! Looking forward to watching him grow with you.

  2. Carrie, I can't believe that Simon would stand for being clipped? A baby? He is certainly very brave. Sounds like all the horses you worked with yesterday did an outstanding job ~ congratulations on training well done!
