A 'Fool'ish April day meeting some challenges

Spring ? it's still wintery here... Mother Nature still foolin' with us by sending snow. Zoe and I wanted to ride anyway.. we thought perhaps we might find an obstacle or two in the woods. And how fortuitous is this ?? Right on my driveway - the big CVPS truck came with telephone poles as we were saddling up. I rushed with tacking up, trotted over quick as a wink -- to tell the boys..don't leave yet - we need to get photo's for our contest :)

The snow is just starting to come down.

Denise - does this qualify for our heavy equipment obstacle ?

If not -- we had the opportunity to meet more later in the day !

Elektra loves to poke things with her nose. That 'pokiness' runs in the family actually.

We headed out toward Mount Ephraim - crossing the highway and down the trail. The snow was deep until we got onto the snowmobile trail. We crossed a couple of nice streams - which I am wondering .. do they come under the heading of puddles ?

Both horses wanted to stop and drink.. even though they each have nice automatic heated waterers - stream water is SO refreshing - and a nice excuse for them to have their 'say' for a minute.

Silly girls !   They are just april fooling us with their thirst.

We continued on up the sloping trail - till we hit the snowmobile route - crossed Breezy Hill Road to  forge ahead up the mountain. Our original destination was to be the "Pink House" which I have photo'd and posted on the blog in the past. This is the trail Keri dislikes for some odd reason. I love to go there - so she just has to put on her big girl pants and deal with it.

When we arrived at the turn off -- we realized.. with the very deep snow and downed trees all over the place -- there was no way we were going to make it to that house. Drat ! So we continued onto the Mount Ephraim route.

We passed plenty of boggy mud -- which I guess if the stream does not make it onto the list of obstacles - this does :)

The woods were beautiful - but we are getting very wet and chilly. Once again, neither of us properly prepared apparel wise.  The snowfall was wetter than we thought it was going to be.. pretty well soaking us. In spots where it was more open - we trotted but the teeny snowflakes stung our faces and eyes.

Watch out :)  more obstacles coming our way :)

Although our horses are not nervous around machinery -- the operators did not see us -- and with the noise I doubt they would hear us trotting up- it was too risky to get closer than this.

We still had quite a ways to trot before we got home. Our intention was to stay out longer - but I admit. This may be one of the few times we actually cut our ride short due to being chilled right to the bone !!  Who would have thought on the first of April we'd need snowpants and more winter gear ?

I had the opportunity to learn barefoot trimming this week.. so I have been under the belly of horses for a few days.  This is Keri's first trot out with her "new" feet and I must say not only an I impressed with the barefoot trim -- Keri is in love with it too :)

I am determined to satisfy my obstacle addiction regardless of this weather  !!!  This was just a slow start to what promises to be a busy month :)

Enjoy ~

  1. I can't even comment on one particular part of your post - I love the whole thing!! The barefoot trimming really intrigues me. I've heard a lot about it. You two are so awesome - no to mention your mounts as well!

  2. Donna - if you come to the ABC convention - I am going to host a clinic on the barefoot trim with an excellent teacher ! It's fairly easy to learn and do.. some of it takes some getting used to as it is very different from the conventional farrier's trim. I always wanted to learn more about it -- and now that I have -- I am a convert and amazed !!

  3. I am psyched you are going to host a clinic on the barefoot trim! I have had four lessons and also read up on it, but it is a lot to remember, I think. I have two very different sets of feet to practice on.
Your blog has me itching to do obstacles now! I did enjoy my "just a ride" though. :)

  4. Loved the big equipment video!! Yes, yes..that sure does count! I was cold though watching and reading your post..Brrrr!! Crazy April weather!!

I can't say enough about the barefoot trim!! I was so excited to see you are giving it a try. It totally changed Reese's hooves....incredible. I am just glad I only have TWO to trim though! =] It's a great upper body work out. lol.

Although looking into the abrasive trimming is an option too. Same barefoot method, only different tools...a hand grinder. Pretty cool. =]

  6. That sure looks like heavy enough equipment:) Love how your horses deal with it!

I also like the barefoot trimming. Voelie does well on it and i'm hoping Suri will too. The farries will be here in two weeks so we'll she how she does!

  7. It was your photo's and commentary of Reese's hooves that first peaked my interest in the barefoot trim Denise.. now many years later - I am finally finding time to learn. We talked about this abrasive trim last week - so I enjoyed the link -- thanks !!
