Great Day at Our Trainer's Ranch

We are truly blessed to have one really nice Saturday and a super trainer! After sustained 50mph winds on Friday (still no rain) Saturday turned out to be beautiful.

Little Miss Sunshine is at our trainers and we are lucky enough to be able to use her arena. It is just chock full of obstacles and we really racked up our points in just a short amount of time. Umbrella, small ball, raincoat, tickle alley, streamer doorway, big ball, and much more. How cool to have a trainer that uses these things as a permanent part of her arena! She uses these with all horses that she trains - Sunny was out on her trails after the third day! I love this trainer (Terri Lindley) and her positive approach toward horses and riders:)

Pictured here is Cody in his RAC tshirt - he wears it everywhere and All the Way May. He did not bring a saddle or headstall, so he had to ride in my dressage saddle LOLOL and made his own headstall.

May and Bruce did very well with all the obstacles. We have worked with most of them before and the only strange thing was a new arena with horses tied out and other new horses being ridden.

After the obstacle work, we took all the horses out on the trails. It is a beautiful ranch and Terri has blazed some very challenging trails for the horses. There are overturned tables, mattresses to cross, bridges, cars, boats, and very steep gullies to climb up and down. Sunny and the trainer took the lead and it was truly amazing to see a green horse so composed and brave.

I have two questions for fellow RACers. How can I take pics inside an arena with my Iphone (mine are waaay too dark)? Bruce and May hopped/jumped over a very large (2 ft )fallen log on the trail. It was at the end of a downhill gully - and I gave Bruce time to back up and look at it, he felt he couldn't just walk over it? How high is too high for a horse on the trail to walk over a log. We are not jumpers, but if the horse needs to jump, I want to let him. Any advice would be helpful. Next weekend is a trail challenge at Bridlewood Stables - new to the OKC area and we are very excited about it! They have done a nice job on their website - check it out. Hugs to all curlies and their owners.

  1. Sounds like a wonderful setup, wow! This is like Top O' the Hill Farm (Betsy Lirakis' place). She and Zoe have the most awesome set up of challenges with which to train horses. I don't really have any advice for you on the log, but I will say that I definitely go with "feeling" like Bruce did. You can just tell. I don't have any hard and fast rule. Did you like the steep up and down gullies? I love those. :) This post is great! Susan in Maine

  2. How fabulous!! I would love to go to a place like that with Reese. He'd love it! Great job to you both and your beautiful curlies. Regarding logs, Reese has stepped over logs well above his knees, but he is a big horse. I think it depends on the horse though. Reese usually has more trouble reaching his hind legs over it! LoL
