Cody and I attended the annual Black Eyed Pea Ride at Lake Carl Blackwell in Stillwater. It is a great trail venue with over 60 miles of trails. Luckily, we had a great trailmaster and got a taste of several of the different trails. We usually just ride on the one trail we really know! It was chilly - in the mid 40s at the highest, but the sun was shining and the wind was thankfully very light. The horses on the trail were lively - Cody rode Warrior's Cleopatra, our grulla filly, a month shy of 4 years old.
I rode Hoosier Daddy (Bruce) and both curlies did wonderfully on the trail. Cool, calm and collected as usual, it is a joy to talk about the horses with other riders on the trail. Lake Carl Blackwell hosts a lot of endurance rides throughout the year and it was suggested that the curlies participate this spring. I know that we would definitely need some conditioning! Cody rides daily, but I am basically a "weekend warrior."
After the ride, we were treated to a traditional black eyed pea dinner complete with cornbread and great desserts. I had to eat one black eyed pea for good luck - yuck - and enjoyed the optional chili:) Before saying our goodbyes to our new and old friend of the trail, we were presented with a great certificate. Now waiting for the nasy weather to arrive and planning the next fun adventure with the curlies.
Very cool! I love the trail riding you do over there! You really got that wonderful and wide landscapes to do that! Why not endurance? Would be a nice goal! And I really like your Bruce!
ReplyDeleteAdena, this sounds like so much fun! I would love to do something like this. I think you should GO FOR IT on the competitive trail this summer, why not?
ReplyDeleteThat does sound like fun--although I might have opted out of the black-eyed peas as well. Bruce is beautiful! I am hoping Sage and I can stay in shape enough through the winter to do the 15 mile Mud Ride down in Woodstock, VT next spring. April 23rd! We should be conditoning buddies as I struggle to be more than just a 'weekend warrior' too.
